Overview

Our Pharmacy First service helps eligible patients access NHS advice and treatment for common conditions directly from the pharmacy. This can reduce waiting times and provide faster support for minor illnesses.

What is Pharmacy First?

Pharmacy First is an NHS service that allows community pharmacists to assess and manage specific minor conditions. If clinically appropriate, we can supply treatment under the service and guide you on next steps.

Conditions commonly supported

Sore throat

Assessment and treatment advice for acute sore throat symptoms.

Sinusitis and ear symptoms

Support for common upper respiratory and ear-related complaints.

Infected insect bites

Quick assessment and treatment where clinically suitable.

Uncomplicated UTI (women)

Assessment for eligible women with uncomplicated urinary symptoms.

How it works

How the consultation works

A pharmacist will assess your symptoms and provide the most appropriate care plan.

  • Clinical assessment at the pharmacy
  • NHS treatment supply if clinically appropriate
  • Self-care and safety-netting advice
  • Referral to GP or urgent care when needed

Who can use this service?

  • Patients registered with a GP in England
  • Condition must match the NHS Pharmacy First pathway criteria
  • Symptoms should be non-emergency and suitable for pharmacy assessment
  • Age and clinical criteria apply for specific conditions

Pharmacy First consultations are provided under NHS criteria where eligible.

When to seek urgent care

If symptoms are severe, worsening, or you feel very unwell, contact NHS 111, your GP, or attend urgent care/A&E as appropriate.
